Mentoring in Project Scheduling Using the Precedence Diagram Method (PDM) as an Effort to Optimize Construction Resources
Abstract
The success of a construction project is strongly determined by the technical personnel’s ability to develop a well-structured and accurate project schedule. However, many field engineers still face limitations in understanding modern scheduling methods, particularly the Precedence Diagram Method (PDM), which results in suboptimal resource utilization and challenges in achieving cost, quality, and time targets. This community engagement program was aimed at enhancing the scheduling competency of technical personnel at CV. PANCA BERSAUDARA through guided implementation of PDM-based project scheduling to mitigate potential delays in construction execution. The program involved 15 technical staff members and utilized a real case study of a government office building construction project in Palembang. The technical scope was deliberately limited to Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) formulation, critical path identification, and resource allocation using PDM.The intervention was conducted through a structured process comprising theoretical exposure, hands-on simulation, case-based problem solving, and performance evaluation using pretest and posttest assessment. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in participants’ understanding, with the average score increasing from 50% to 80% after the training. Participants were able to successfully apply WBS development, critical path determination, and more efficient resource allocation strategies. Strategically, this program strengthens the company’s readiness to support regional and national-scale government projects that demand high scheduling accuracy, while also promoting a more measurable system of time and cost control within its future operational practices. Beyond individual capacity building, the program contributed to enhancing the company’s overall project management effectiveness, particularly in decision-making and delay risk mitigation.
