Food Security: The Interdependence Between Livestock and Agriculture
Abstract
A total of 10,248.68 tons of livestock waste per broiler chicken harvest cycle in Bojonegoro is a serious problem, as it is often unmanaged and causes pollution. This waste has the potential to be processed into organic fertilizer thru fermentation. Thru a method of mutual agreement, waste is processed on the farm by farmers and utilized on the cultivated land of LMDH Wono Lestari. Technically, the farmers provide the composting processing area, while the farmers provide the labor and human resources, as well as a commitment to implementation. This service resulted in 30 tons of compost for agricultural land in the forest area. Composting turns rice husks into burnt rice husks with the application of M21 activator, molasses, and Trichoderma in the correct amounts, at the right times, and using the appropriate methods, resulting in: integrated connection between farmers and livestock breeders, implementation of clean production strategies, availability of an integrated waste management system, training and education, an organic fertilizer supply chain, supply chain efficiency, diversification of composting businesses and cooperation among farmers, quality standardization, education and implementation of sustainable agriculture, and optimized marketing. Thru this community service, it is estimated that fertilizer purchases can be reduced by around 2 - 3 million per hectare. The community is actively involved, especially the farmers who produce it, as they benefit from accommodating large quantities of compost. Furthermore, online sales are estimated to generate revenue of Rp 37,937,500. This addresses the source of funds for sustainable operations. The contribution of this program to the SDGs, particularly in relation to food security and promoting sustainable agriculture (Goal 2) and responsible consumption and production (Goal 12). The sustainability of this program can be enhanced by integrating it with government programs and strengthening the capacity of farmers and livestock breeders. To replicate this program, potential livestock farming areas can be mapped, innovation technology can be adapted, and derivative products can be developed.
