Implementation of the SITANGAN Program (Socialization of the Six-Step Handwashing Technique) as an Effort to Improve Awareness and Understanding of Personal Hygiene among Students of SDN Jejel, Jejel Village, Ngimbang District, Lamongan Regency
Abstract
The SITANGAN (Six-Step Handwashing Socialization) program was a community service activity aimed at improving the awareness, knowledge, and skills of elementary school students in practicing the WHO-recommended six-step handwashing technique. The main problems identified at SDN Jejel, Ngimbang District, Lamongan Regency, were the students’ limited understanding of proper handwashing techniques and the lack of structured clean and healthy living habits within the school environment. The program was implemented using participatory educational methods, including demonstrations, direct practice, educational songs, and small-group mentoring conducted by university students. The activities were carried out on July 16 and 19, 2025, involving approximately 120 students from SDN Jejel. Based on observations during the activities, students demonstrated improved understanding and skills related to the six-step handwashing technique after participating in the program. Most students were able to understand the correct sequence of handwashing steps and perform them independently during practice sessions. In addition, students’ participation and enthusiasm increased compared to before the implementation of the program. The use of interactive educational media and direct practice approaches helped students better understand the material and encouraged the development of clean and healthy habits. However, several challenges were encountered during the implementation, including difficulties in maintaining students’ attentiveness during material presentations and the inconsistent availability of handwashing soap at the school. Overall, the SITANGAN program demonstrated that practice-based and habituation-oriented health education can serve as an effective promotive strategy for improving clean and healthy living behaviors among elementary school students.
