Optimization of Organic Waste Utilization in the School Environment Through the Creation of Economically Valuable Resin Keychains at SMA Taruna Nala
Abstract
Organic waste in the form of dried flowers and leaves in school environments is frequently underutilized, despite its potential as a raw material for creative products with educational and economic value. A similar condition was observed at SMA Negeri Taruna Nala Malang, which has extensive green areas, yet the botanical waste generated has not been managed productively. This community service activity aimed to optimize the utilization of school organic waste through training in resin keychain production, while simultaneously strengthening students' sustainability awareness and entrepreneurial skills. The activity was implemented using an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) approach integrated with project-based learning (PjBL), involving 100 students organized into working groups. The program stages included preparation, collection of botanical waste materials, drying and pressing of plant materials, resin fabrication, and implementation reflection. Evaluation was conducted using attendance records, observation sheets, product assessment rubrics, and participant response questionnaires, with success indicators encompassing participant attendance, product feasibility, and positive participant response toward the activity. The results indicated that all success indicators were achieved above the established minimum targets. Participant attendance reached 100%, 90% of participants successfully produced resin keychains categorized as feasible, and 90% of participants provided positive responses toward the activity, particularly regarding understanding of organic waste utilization and the importance of sustainable environmental management. Reflection results also demonstrated that this activity was able to foster creativity, meticulousness based on local potential. Thus, training in resin keychain production using botanical waste proved effective as an applicable, educational, and sustainable school-based community service model, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
