Strengthening the Competence of Physical Education Teachers in Mataram City in Designing Physical Literacy- and Character-Based Learning
Abstract
This community service program was motivated by the need of Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) teachers in Mataram City to design learning that is not only oriented toward mastering sports techniques but also integrates physical literacy and student character development. This program aimed to strengthen PJOK teachers’ understanding and skills in developing learning tools based on physical literacy and character education. The implementation method used participatory training through focus group discussions, learning tool development practices, product review, and product-based mentoring. The activity was conducted offline on May 26, 2026, at the Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika campus in collaboration with the PJOK Teacher Working Group (KKG) of Mataram City. The program was attended by 20 elementary school PJOK teachers representing each subdistrict in Mataram City and resulted in four learning tool designs and one physical literacy learning module. Data were collected through observation, discussion notes, documentation, participant reflections, and reviews of the developed learning tool designs, and were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. Based on product reviews and participant reflections, the results showed an improvement in teachers’ understanding of the dimensions of physical literacy, the integration of character values, the formulation of holistic learning objectives, and the development of authentic assessment. The product review results indicated that the learning tool designs included holistic learning objectives, participatory activities, integration of character values, authentic assessment rubrics, and student reflection sheets. This community service program contributes to improving the quality of PJOK learning that is active, inclusive, reflective, and supportive of the achievement of quality education.
