Extension Program Design for the Utilization of Water Hyacinth Waste as Bokashi in Melon Cultivation in Tanjung Beringin District
Abstract
The utilization of local resources through the processing of organic waste into bokashi fertilizer is one approach to supporting sustainable agriculture. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) available in irrigation canals, swamps, and water bodies in Nagur Village, Tanjung Beringin District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, has not been optimally utilized as an organic material for agricultural activities. This activity aimed to design and implement an extension program on the utilization of water hyacinth waste as bokashi in melon cultivation based on local potential and farmers’ needs. The activity involved 30 melon farmers and was conducted through field observations, interviews, questionnaire distribution, extension activities, and demonstrations of bokashi production and application. Data were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively to describe regional conditions, participant characteristics, acceptance levels, and the application of the innovation by farmers. The results showed that farmers’ acceptance of the extension program reached 81.38%, categorized as very favorable. A total of 12 farmers (40%) independently produced bokashi, while 15 farmers (50%) applied bokashi in melon cultivation. The constraints to independent bokashi production included limited time, farming workload, farmers’ unfamiliarity with processing organic waste, and the habitual use of inorganic fertilizers. These findings indicate that the extension activity encouraged initial acceptance and application of water hyacinth as bokashi; however, independent production still requires continuous assistance.
