Youth Empowerment through Styrofoam-Based Aerofoam Kit Training in Kalirejo Village
Abstract
The Kalirejo Aircraft Village Program was implemented as a youth empowerment initiative linking the reuse of discarded fruit-box expanded polystyrene with hands-on aeromodelling training. In this program, the Aerofoam Kit refers to an educational model-aircraft kit made from reusable styrofoam. The activity aimed to develop participants’ basic skills in processing styrofoam into Aerofoam Kits, introduce a safe and structured production process, and establish an initial foundation for the Kalirejo Aircraft Village initiative. The program applied a participatory empowerment and learning-by-doing approach through demonstrations, direct practice, group mentoring, process observation, quality control, branding introduction, and follow-up planning. Twelve participants attended the seven-day training from 28 July to 4 August 2026. They were divided into four groups of three participants, each accompanied by an instructor from the implementation team. Twenty implementation-team members served as instructors, technical assistants, documentation staff, logistics personnel, and activity support. Participant attendance was relatively consistent across almost all training sessions. Practice observations showed that participants were able to follow the basic kit-making stages, although individual independence was not measured using a standardized scoring rubric or pre-test and post-test. The main technical constraints involved dimensional precision, cutting-angle consistency, and control of hot-wire cutting tools. Completed outputs included participant-made Aerofoam Kits, a training module, master patterns, production equipment, visual identity materials, and aeromodelling demonstrations. The program therefore demonstrates an initial technical and learning foundation that may support youth empowerment, while continuity requires regular practice, quality standardization, local management, and further monitoring
