Improving The Indonesian Overcoming Children's Association (PARI) Malaysia Wakf Literacy
Abstract
This community service activity aims to strengthen waqf literacy in the Indonesian Overseas Children Association (PARI) Malaysia. The partner's problem is the low literacy of productive waqf, where waqf is still understood only as land waqf for mosques and graves, and has not been understood as a productive economic instrument and investment in the afterlife. The characteristics of PARI participants who are the main target are Indonesian Migrant Workers - PMI informal sector in Malaysia as many as 80 people, the majority aged 25-45 years, with a junior high-high school educational background, have a steady income but do not yet have long-term productive assets. Economically, this group is a vulnerable group that has not shown the economic impact of sharia financial management, characterized by consumptive financial patterns, not yet familiar with cash waqf instruments, and not yet connected to official nazhir institutions. The purpose of this PkM is to increase waqf literacy and access to sharia financial education as socio-economic capital. The implementation method uses participatory education and counseling which was held on February 6, 2025 at Level 7, Menara Arina Uniti, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The evaluation was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests, as well as observations of participant responses. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in literacy indicators. Participants' knowledge scores on the concept of productive waqf increased from an average of 45.2% in the pre-test to 87.5% in the post-test. A total of 82% of participants were able to differentiate between waqf, zakat, infaq, and sadaqah, and 78% of participants understood the mechanism of cash waqf starting from IDR 10,000 through LKS-PWU. These results were illustrated by the high enthusiasm during the discussion and question and answer session regarding waqf law, applications in the digital era, and waqf-based economic empowerment management. Due to time constraints, the long-term economic impact could not be measured in this activity, so the PkM output was limited to the implementation of counseling and increased knowledge. Going forward, PARI is expected to become an initiator of the productive waqf movement among the Indonesian diaspora in Malaysia.
