Materi meliputi kosakata teknis kecantikan, ekspresi pelayanan, konsultasi pelanggan, penjelasan prosedur, penanganan keluhan, serta pengenalan konten promosi digital sederhana berbahasa Inggris. Modul English for Cosmetology yang dihasilkan menjadi sarana keberlanjutan belajar mandiri peserta.
English for Beauty Services Training to Strengthen the Communication Competence of the Beauty and Makeup Community at the Pacitan Vocational Training Center
Abstract
This community service program aimed to strengthen the English communication competence of a cosmetology community in beauty service contexts through training based on English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The program responded to participants’ limited ability to use technical terms, explain service procedures, and conduct service interactions in English, as identified through an initial needs analysis. The training was conducted on April 20-21, 2026, at the Pacitan Vocational Training Center (Balai Latihan Kerja/BLK) and involved 15 participants from the cosmetology community. It employed a needs-based, contextual, and practice-based approach, including customer-service role plays between beauticians and clients. The materials covered technical beauty vocabulary, service expressions, client consultation, procedure explanation, complaint handling, and an introduction to simple English promotional content. Participants’ communication performance was assessed at the end of the training through structured role plays using a five-aspect analytic rubric (vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and interaction), and participants’ perceptions were collected through a feedback questionnaire. After the training, all participants demonstrated basic communication competence, with a mean score of 13.73 out of 20; 13.3% were categorized as very good, 46.7% as good, and 40.0% as fair. Interaction obtained the highest mean score (3.27 out of 4), whereas grammar obtained the lowest (2.47). Of the questionnaire respondents, 83.3% agreed or strongly agreed that the training improved their communication skills. As no pre-test was administered, these results describe post-training attainment rather than the magnitude of improvement. The resulting English for Cosmetology module serves as a resource for participants’ continued self-directed learning.
