Enhancing Self-Esteem to Reduce Shyness Among Students
Shyness often hinders students from engaging in social interactions and affects their academic performance. This study aims to enhance self-esteem to reduce shyness levels among students at MAN 1 Polman. The implementation method includes psychoeducation, interactive games, and reflection. This program involved 10 students with moderate shyness levels. Initially, a pre-test using a shyness scale was conducted to measure the baseline level of shyness, followed by a specifically designed intervention to boost self-esteem. Results showed a decrease in shyness scores from an average of 72.6 in the pre-test to 64.2 in the post-test, indicating the intervention's effectiveness, with a median reduction from 69.0 to 63.5. The Wilcoxon test yielded W = 47, p < 0.05, with a large effect size of 0.709, suggesting a significant impact of self-esteem enhancement on reducing shyness levels. Observations highlighted an increase in student engagement in classroom activities and improved self-confidence. This study concludes that self-esteem enhancement through psychoeducational and game-based approaches can significantly help reduce shyness. It is recommended that schools adopt similar programs on an ongoing basis with support from teachers and counselors to maintain these positive outcomes.
