Enhancing Knowledge on the Use of Botanical Pesticides and Personal Protective Equipment to Prevent Pesticide Poisoning among Farmers in Pematang Raya Village, Simalungun Regency
Pesticide poisoning remains a serious health issue among farmers in many regions, including Simalungun Regency. This Community Service Program aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge on the production and utilization of botanical pesticides as environmentally friendly alternatives, as well as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent pesticide poisoning. The methods applied included counseling, practical training, and field application of botanical pesticides. The target group consisted of 20 farmers in Pematang Raya Village. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests to assess knowledge improvement. Results revealed a significant increase: in the pre-test, 45% of participants were in the low category, while in the post-test no participants remained in the low category and 60% reached the high category. Moreover, participants successfully practiced the production of botanical pesticides using chili, garlic, shallots, and papaya leaves, which proved effective in controlling pests without causing negative environmental impacts. PPE usage also improved in terms of both knowledge and behavior following the intervention. This program concludes that education through counseling and training plays a crucial role in raising farmers’ occupational health awareness while simultaneously providing an environmentally friendly solution for pest control through botanical pesticides.
