Enhancing Basic Statistical Literacy of PGMI Students through JASP Training in Research Data Analysis
Basic statistical literacy is an essential competence for prospective teacher students in designing research, selecting appropriate statistical tests, interpreting statistical outputs, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. However, students in the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Program still face difficulties in understanding basic statistical concepts, determining appropriate statistical tests, and using statistical software to support thesis-related data analysis. This community service program aimed to improve the basic statistical literacy of PGMI students through training and mentoring in the use of JASP as open-source statistical software. The program was conducted at Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram using a needs-based training design. The initial needs assessment involved 99 respondents out of 210 targeted students, while the core training involved 28 students from class C who were included in the pretest, posttest, and response questionnaire analysis. The training consisted of strengthening basic statistical concepts, demonstrating the use of JASP, practicing data analysis, discussing educational research cases, and mentoring students in interpreting statistical outputs. The results showed an increase in the mean score from 8.57 in the pretest to 10.89 in the posttest. The paired-sample t-test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, with p < 0.001 and Cohen’s d of 0.870, indicating a large effect size. Participants’ responses were also positive, with an overall mean score of 3.91 or 78.19%, categorized as good. These findings indicate that JASP training not only improves students’ basic statistical understanding but also serves as a practical mentoring model based on open-source software to strengthen PGMI students’ readiness to conduct thesis-related data analysis.
