Education on Heart Disease and Hypertension and the Use of Medicinal Plants among Older Adults at Landungsari Posyandu, Malang
Hypertension and heart disease are common health problems among older adults, highlighting the need for simple, contextual, and participant-oriented health education. This community service program aimed to improve older adults’ understanding of hypertension, heart disease, risk factors, complications, and the appropriate use of medicinal plants as part of health maintenance. The program was conducted at Cepiring Elderly Health Post (Posyandu Cepiring), Landungsari Village, Dau District, Malang Regency, involving 20 older adult participants. The activities consisted of educational sessions using lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions, followed by demonstrations on the use of medicinal plants, including ginger, temulawak, turmeric, cinnamon, sappan wood, and lemongrass. Evaluation was conducted qualitatively through observations of participant engagement. The results indicated that participants actively engaged in discussions, asked questions about hypertension, heart disease, and stroke, related the material to their everyday health experiences, and participated in the medicinal plant demonstrations. These findings suggest that contextual educational approaches can be effectively implemented in elderly health post activities, although improvements in knowledge could not be quantitatively determined because pretest and posttest data were not collected
