Building Global Balance by Implementing Tri Hita Karana for Social, Ecological and Cultural Sustainability
Abstract
The Tri Hita Karana (THK) philosophy, which is rooted in Balinese culture, symbolizes harmony between humans and God (Parahyangan), humans and each other (Pawongan), and humans and the environment (Palemahan). This systematic literature review explores the application of THK in the social, ecological, and cultural fields through literature review analysis using descriptive qualitative methodology. This research analysis study was published between 2015 and 2024. In the social sector, THK has proven effective in improving character formation, ethical behavior, and learning outcomes, as well as instilling values such as honesty and cooperation. In the ecological aspect, THK is applied to preserve the Subak irrigation system and the Ayung River, highlighting community collaboration in maintaining ecosystem balance. From a cultural perspective, THK preserves local identity through traditional value-based governance that supports sustainability across generations. The study results show that THK's holistic approach has significant potential in overcoming the challenges of global balance, especially in balancing development with cultural preservation. However, research gaps remain, such as the lack of studies regarding the application of THK outside Bali and its integration with modern technology. Future research is expected to explore the adaptation of THK principles in a global context and encourage interdisciplinary innovation to ensure their relevance and widespread application.
