Analysis of Road Damage Using the Surface Distress Index (SDI) Method on the Darul Hikmah Terong Tawah Road
Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the flexible pavement condition of Darul Hikmah Road located in Terong Tawah Village, Labuapi District, West Lombok Regency. This road plays a strategic role as a connector between residential areas, schools, commercial centers, and logistics routes, yet has not received proper maintenance. The study employs the Surface Distress Index (SDI) method, a quantitative visual approach that assesses pavement surface damage based on four parameters: crack area and width, pothole count, and wheel path deformation. Data were collected through a 500-meter visual survey divided into five segments based on stationing (STA). The results reveal that dominant types of damage include alligator cracking, potholes, and edge failures, unevenly distributed across the segments. The average SDI value was 59, indicating a fair condition that necessitates periodic maintenance. The highest SDI score (85) was recorded in STA 0+000 to STA 0+200, while the best segment condition (SDI 25) was found in STA 0+200 to STA 0+400. These findings affirm the practicality and accuracy of the SDI method in guiding maintenance planning, particularly in regions with limited technical resources. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of adequate drainage systems and appropriate geometric road design to extend pavement service life and ensure safe, efficient traffic flow.
