Optimization of Local Food as a Sustainable Solution to Reduce Stunting in the Rural Area of Jereweh District
Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of the local food optimization concept and identify its inhibiting factors as a sustainable solution for reducing stunting in the rural area of Jereweh District. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, involving 18 key informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants (Local Government Officials, Health Workers, Community Leaders, and Mothers of Toddlers), observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of local food optimization has shown significant progress particularly in a 25% increase in community nutrition knowledge and a 15% reduction in negative stigma towards local food through a multisectoral approach that integrates: (1) community-based nutrition education, (2) community-driven interventions, and (3) family economic empowerment. However, its full implementation is hindered by complex structural and cultural challenges. Key barriers include a lack of community knowledge, a negative stigma associated with local food, economic constraints, inadequate distribution infrastructure, and suboptimal cross-sectoral coordination. This study emphasizes that transforming the potential of local food into a tangible, sustainable solution requires a systemic approach that integrates the food system, social innovation for behavior change, and strong affirmative policies.
