The Effect of Syllable Method Assisted by Pictures on the Reading Ability of Grade II Students at SDN 15 Cakranegara
Abstract
This research aims to investigate the effect of the syllable method, supported by pictures, on the reading abilities of second-grade students at SDN 15 Cakranegara, as well as how this method influences their skills. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing an experimental method with a quasi-experimental design. The study involved 30 second-grade students, divided into a control class and an experimental class. The independent variable in the study is the syllable method with picture assistance, while the dependent variable is the students' initial reading abilities. Data were gathered through observations, tests, interviews, and documentation. The analysis revealed a significant impact of the syllable method, supported by pictures, on improving the students' early reading skills. Results from an Independent Sample t-test using SPSS software showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, and a t-value of 4.905, which is higher than the critical value of 2.048, confirming the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Additionally, interviews with the teacher revealed that the method aids students in recognizing, understanding, and retaining syllable patterns more effectively, boosting their motivation and confidence. Observational data also reinforced these findings, indicating that the teacher applied the method consistently, and students were more active and engaged during the lessons. Overall, the results demonstrate that the syllable method, aided by pictures, has a positive effect on both the learning process and the improvement of early reading skills.
