Abstract

The Dynamics of Professional Identity Formation in Physical Education, Sports, and Health Teachers: A Literature Review

Abstract

This study systematically reviews the literature on the dynamics ofthe formation of professional identity among Physical Education, Sports, andHealth (PJOK) teachers in order to formulate conceptual and practical implications forstrengthening professionalism in Indonesia. Using a LiteratureReview (SLR) approach based on PRISMA, 43 articles published between 2010 and 2025 from Scopus,ERIC, ScienceDirect, and national sources were selected through the identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages. The analysis was conducted thematically tomap patterns, categories, and inter-theme relationships. The findings show thatthe professional identity of PJOK teachers is dynamic and multidimensional, formed through the interaction of personal factors (reflective experience, emotions, professional values), social factors (peer support, school culture, institutional recognition), and structural factors (policy, school organization). The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and the development of digital technology encouragea redefinition of the role of PJOK teachers from physical activity instructors to health facilitators, lifelong learners, and agents of change in the school ecosystem. The practical implications emphasize the need for sustainable strategies: structured individual reflection, strengthening reflective professional learning communities (PLCs), as well as institutional support and affirmative policies in the form ofminimum facilities, innovation incentives, and tiered certification programs. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for policymakers, teacher training institutions, andprofessional organizations in designing an ecosystem that supports the formation ofa strong, adaptive professional identity for PJOK teachers that is in line withchanges in educational paradigms and technology.
