The Effect of Plyo-Agility Training on Agility and Explosive Power in Sepak Takraw Athletes in South Sulawesi
Abstract
Sepak takraw is a sport characterized by explosive lower-limb actions, rapid changes of direction, and high demands on technical precision. This study aimed to examine changes in lower-limb power and foot agility following a 12-week plyo-agility training program in South Sulawesi sepak takraw athletes. A quantitative field experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 20 athletes, consisting of 10 males and 10 females. The intervention was conducted three times per week and combined plyometric exercises with agility-oriented drills. Lower-limb power was measured using the digital vertical jump test, while foot agility was assessed through the T-test agility protocol. The results showed improved scores in both variables after the intervention. Overall agility performance improved, as indicated by a reduction in mean T-test time from 11.45 s to 10.60 s, representing a 7.45% change. Lower-limb power also increased, with mean vertical jump performance rising from 48.20 cm to 52.82 cm, equivalent to a 9.61% change. Male and female athletes both demonstrated positive changes, although male athletes maintained higher absolute performance values in both agility and explosive power. These findings indicate that plyo-agility training may help support improvements in multidirectional movement efficiency and explosive lower-extremity performance simultaneously. In conclusion, plyo-agility training represents a practical and sport-relevant conditioning approach for sepak takraw athletes. The study provides preliminary empirical support for integrating plyometric and agility components in athlete development programs and contributes to the still limited evidence base on sport-specific conditioning in sepak takraw. Further controlled research is needed to strengthen causal inference and refine training recommendations.
