Effectiveness of Tennis Training Program in Improving Athlete Performance and Fitness
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of tennis training programs in improving athlete performance and physical fitness through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The study employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using data sources obtained from Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Garuda, and SINTA published between 2020 and 2025. The literature search process was conducted using keyword combinations and Boolean operators, resulting in 20 scientific articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that various training methods such as functional training, neuromuscular training, plyometric training, strength and conditioning, agility training, and technique-based drill and target exercises were effective in improving tennis athletes’ performance and physical fitness. Functional training was identified as the most comprehensive method in improving strength, power, movement quality, and technical skills among young and junior athletes. Meanwhile, neuromuscular and plyometric training were more effective in improving explosive power and agility, whereas strength and conditioning was more dominant in increasing strength and service speed. Training programs conducted for 6–12 weeks demonstrated significant improvements in physical fitness, technical quality, and tennis performance. Therefore, the effectiveness of tennis training programs is highly influenced by the suitability of training methods, athlete level, training duration, and the systematic integration of physical and technical training.
