Implementation of Project Based Learning Assisted by Digital Media to Support Concept Understanding in Science Learning for Fifth Grade Elementary School Students
Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of Project Based Learning (PjBL) assisted by digital media in supporting conceptual understanding of Natural and Social Science (IPAS) among fifth-grade elementary school students. The study employed a descriptive-implementative approach supported by simple quantitative data, conducted over three sessions in Class V of SDN 232 Blok Sawah, Bandung, involving 30 students. Research instruments included observation sheets, project assessment rubrics, peer assessment forms, and cognitive tests (multiple choice and essay), developed based on IPAS conceptual understanding indicators. The procedure followed modified PjBL phases: experiencing, understanding, applying, analyzing, communicating, and evaluating, through digital poster and educational game projects on the topic of Indonesian natural wealth. Data analysis covered student activity observation, project rubric scoring, and cognitive test analysis comprising mean scores and mastery percentages. Results indicate that the PjBL implementation assisted by digital media shows positive indications toward student engagement and IPAS conceptual understanding achievement, marked by 80% cognitive mastery (mean score 78.7), improvement in active student engagement from approximately 60% in the first session to 85% in the third session, and project quality demonstrating students’ abilities to identify, explain, and connect concepts of Indonesian natural wealth with daily life. As this study did not employ a control group or pretest-posttest design, findings are contextual and cannot be generalized as evidence of causal effectiveness.
