Low Interest in Continuing Education in Sukaraja Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the low interest in continuing education in Sukaraja Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency, and to examine the roles of family, school, and community in shaping students’ interest in pursuing further education. The 2023 Sukaraja Village Profile shows that, out of 52 junior high school graduates, only 28 students, or approximately 54%, continued to senior high school or vocational high school. The remaining graduates chose to engage in family economic activities or entered early marriage. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The informants consisted of junior high school graduates who did not continue their education, parents or guardians, junior high school teachers, and community leaders, selected purposively until data saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. Data trustworthiness was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that the low interest in continuing education is influenced by interrelated internal and external factors. Internal factors include low learning motivation, weak future orientation, and pragmatic perceptions of the benefits of education. External factors include family economic constraints, limited parental support, unsupportive school experiences, peer influence, early work culture, and early marriage practices. This study concludes that the issue is multidimensional and requires collaboration among families, schools, village government, and the community.
