Pre-Competitive Anxiety among PS Daygun Football Players before a National League 4 Match
Abstract
Pre-competitive anxiety is a psychological factor that may influence football players’ readiness and performance, particularly before important matches. Players competing at the regional-to-national level may experience pressure related to winning demands, club reputation, coach expectations, and the need to prove themselves in a broader competitive context. This study aimed to analyze the anxiety level of PS Daygun football players before a National League 4 match based on three indicators: competitive anxiety, cognitive anxiety, and somatic anxiety. This study employed a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all PS Daygun players involved in preparation for the National League 4 match, with 23 players selected using total sampling. The research instrument was a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 30 items. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, indicator scores, and anxiety categories. The results showed that 11 players (47.83%) were in the high anxiety category, while 3 players (13.04%) were in the very high category. Overall, 60.87% of the players experienced high to very high anxiety. Based on the indicators, somatic anxiety obtained the highest score, with 637 or 69.24%, followed by competitive anxiety with 555 or 60.33%, and cognitive anxiety with 549 or 59.67%. This study concludes that anxiety among PS Daygun players before the National League 4 match was more dominant in somatic symptoms than in competitive and cognitive aspects.
