Local Wisdom-Based Homestay Development Strategy to Support Sustainable Tourism in Central Lombok Regency
Abstract
Local wisdom-based homestay development has become an important strategy for supporting sustainable tourism by integrating economic, socio-cultural, environmental, and governance aspects. This study aimed to identify the existing conditions of local wisdom-based homestays, analyze similarities and differences in their implementation across three tourism villages, and formulate appropriate development strategies. A qualitative comparative study was conducted in Gonjak Village, Bujak Permai Village, and Setanggor Village, Central Lombok Regency. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, including village officials, homestay managers, traditional leaders, MSME actors, employees, and tourists. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation using expert-validated research instruments. Data credibility was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis combined with SWOT analysis. The findings indicate that all three villages have incorporated Sasak local wisdom through traditional architecture, local cuisine, cultural traditions, and community-tourist interactions. This study identified three homestay typologies: the Social-Cultural Homestay in Gonjak Village, the Agro-Permaculture Homestay in Bujak Permai Village, and the Cultural Performance Homestay in Setanggor Village. Gonjak Village emphasizes rural tourism experiences, Bujak Permai integrates agricultural and cultural activities, while Setanggor demonstrates relatively stronger institutional management. Recommended development strategies include strengthening Sasak cultural identity, improving human resource capacity, empowering local communities, implementing sustainable environmental management, and enhancing digital marketing and tourism networking. These strategies are expected to strengthen sustainable tourism development in Central Lombok Regency
