The Effect of Using the Canva Application as a Learning Medium on the Creativity and Learning Outcomes of Grade VIII Students at MTs NW Korleko
Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of using Canva as a learning medium on the creativity and learning outcomes of eighth-grade students at MTs NW Korleko. Prior studies have more often assessed creativity or learning outcomes separately and remain limited within the context of Islamic junior secondary schools (Madrasah Tsanawiyah); this study seeks to address that gap by examining both outcomes together in this context, without claiming substantial novelty. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 36 students: an experimental group (n = 18) receiving Canva-assisted instruction and a control group (n = 18) receiving conventional instruction. Treatment assignment was made at the class level, while individual students remained in their pre-existing classes. Data were collected using a learning-outcome test and a creativity questionnaire administered after the treatment, with no creativity pretest conducted. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene's test, independent samples t-test, and Cohen's d effect size with SPSS version 22. The results showed that the experimental group's post-treatment creativity scores were significantly higher than the control group's, t(34) = 3.980, p < .001, with Cohen's d = 1.33 (large effect); because creativity was measured only after the treatment, this finding reflects a difference at the final measurement rather than direct evidence of an increase. For learning outcomes, the independent samples t-test showed no significant difference between groups, t(34) = 0.054, p = .958. Thus, Canva use was associated with higher final creativity scores but did not demonstrate an advantage in cognitive learning outcomes in this study.
