The Effect of the Teams Games Tournament Instructional Model on Physical Education Participation Among Eighth-Grade Students at SMPN 1 Kandangan
Abstract
This study was motivated by suboptimal student participation in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) classes among eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Kandangan, as reflected in limited engagement in discussions, group work, practical activities, and enthusiasm during learning. Previous research on Teams Games Tournament (TGT) in physical education has focused mainly on motivation and learning outcomes, while studies specifically examining the effect of TGT on junior high school students' learning participation remain limited. This study aimed to determine the effect of the TGT cooperative learning model on student participation. A quantitative pre-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design was used. The sample comprised 31 eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Participation data were collected using an observation sheet during basketball passing lessons covering the chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, a paired-samples t-test, and N-Gain. The mean participation score increased from 63.74 at pretest to 83.71 at posttest. The paired-samples t-test showed a significant difference, t(30) = -34.984, p < 0.001, while the mean N-Gain was 55.47%, categorized as moderate. These findings indicate that TGT implementation was followed by increased student participation. However, because the study did not include a control group, the observed effect should be interpreted cautiously and does not establish TGT as the sole causal factor.
