Mothers' Understanding of the Benefits and Administration of Deworming Medication to Children at Sigompul Community Health Center
Abstract
Maternal understanding of the purpose, timing, and administration of deworming medication contributes to the prevention of helminth infection in children. This study profiled mothers' knowledge and examined its relationship with educational attainment in the Sigompul Community Health Center area. An analytical cross-sectional survey was carried out on May 27, 2026. The sample comprised 80 women who had a child between 1 and 12 years of age and were chosen by simple random sampling. A 10-item closed questionnaire assigned one point to each correct response and zero to an incorrect response. Total scores were classified as good (76-100%), adequate (56-75%), or poor (55% or less). Counts and percentages described the data, while the Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test evaluated the association because the Chi-square requirements were not satisfied. The largest groups were mothers aged 36-45 years (46.3%), those with two children (28.8%), higher-education graduates (58.8%), and homemakers (35.0%). Good knowledge was recorded for 76 mothers (95.0%) and adequate knowledge for 4 mothers (5.0%); no participant was classified as having poor knowledge. The percentages with good knowledge were 0% in the junior secondary group, 93.8% in the senior secondary group, and 97.9% in the higher-education group. The exact analysis yielded p=.028. Educational attainment was statistically related to how well mothers understood the purpose and administration of deworming medication. This finding warrants caution because participants were distributed very unevenly across the education and knowledge categories. Health education at the community health center should therefore be delivered in forms suited to the audience's health literacy.
