Abstract
This study aims to determine the initial responses of fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Korleko to basic movement learning, to describe the implementation of the modified Bentengan game as a learning medium in physical education, and to test the difference in student response scores before and after the modification was implemented. A quasi-experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design without a control group was used. The sample consisted of 20 fifth-grade students selected by total sampling. The Bentengan game was modified in terms of field size, number of players, rules, and movement activities, and was implemented over 12 sessions. Student responses were measured with a closed 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire (score range 15 to 60; Cronbach's alpha = 0.932) completed by the students themselves at pretest and posttest. Data were analysed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test because the difference scores were not normally distributed (Shapiro-Wilk), supported by a paired-samples t-test, an effect size, and a 95% confidence interval. The mean questionnaire score increased from 43.85 at pretest to 55.85 at posttest (a difference of 12.00 points, or 27.37%; Z = −3.73; p < 0.001; t(19) = 8.44; Cohen's dz = 1.89; 95% CI of the difference [9.02, 14.98]). This indicates a significant increase in student response scores after the modified game was implemented. However, because there was no control group, the questionnaire is a self-report, and posttest scores were close to the maximum, the increase cannot be attributed causally to the intervention alone, nor read as an improvement in basic movement skills.
