Analysis of the Impact of Visual Impairment on the Grade Point Average of Undergraduate Medical Students at Universitas Prima Indonesia
Abstract
Visual impairment is common among students who perform intensive near-vision activities and may interfere with learning. This study examined whether cumulative grade point average (GPA) differed across visual-impairment categories among undergraduate medical students at Universitas Prima Indonesia. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2026 and included 100 students from the 2023 cohort who met the eligibility criteria. Monocular distance visual acuity was assessed with a Snellen chart at 6 m. Students whose visual acuity was worse than 6/6 underwent subjective refraction with trial lenses, and GPA was obtained from academic records. Because GPA was not normally distributed, differences across visual categories were tested with the Kruskal-Wallis test. Seventy-four participants (74.0%) were women. Visual status was classified as normal in 33 students (33.0%), mild impairment in 43 (43.0%), moderate impairment in 21 (21.0%), and high impairment in 3 (3.0%). Mean GPA was 3.2281 ± 0.34022 (range, 1.73-4.00); 16.0% of students had a high GPA, 73.0% a moderate GPA, and 11.0% a low GPA. GPA mean ranks were 43.08, 56.30, 53.90, and 25.17 in the normal, mild, moderate, and high visual-impairment groups, respectively. The Kruskal-Wallis test yielded H=6.574, df=3, and p=.087. GPA did not differ significantly across visual-impairment categories. Vision correction and unmeasured academic or psychosocial factors may have influenced the observed association.
