TREE PLANTING ACTIVITIES AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY EFFORT IN SEMBALUN VILLAGE
Abstract
Environmental damage due to land conversion and uncontrolled tree cutting in Sembalun Village is a serious threat to the sustainability of the local ecosystem. This service activity aims to increase community awareness of the importance of environmental conservation through a participatory tree planting program. The implementation method consists of three main stages: introduction to the activity, handing over productive tree seedlings (candlenut, Calliandra, coffee, and cinnamon), and planting trees with the community at critical land points. The results of the activity showed the enthusiasm and active involvement of the community, increased understanding of the ecological functions of trees, and long-term commitment to maintain and care for the planted plants. In conclusion, the educational and collaborative approach in tree planting activities proved to be effective in fostering a sense of community ownership and responsibility for the environment. The implications of this activity show that community-based environmental conservation can be a sustainable strategy to maintain ecosystem balance in the foothill area.
