Implementation of the GEMA Air Program for the Prevention of Water-Borne Diseases among the Women’s PKK Community in Sumberejo Village Gedangan Malang
Abstract
Water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and leptospirosis remain a public health problem, especially in rural areas with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation. Lack of understanding at the household level is a significant risk factor in the spread of these diseases. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and awareness of the women’s PKK group in Sumberejo Village, Gedangan District, Malang Regency regarding the prevention of water-borne diseases through the GEMA AIR Program (Gerakan Masyarakat Sadar Air – Community Movement for Water Awareness). This program also responds to the minimal use of the ADDIE approach to waterborne disease problems in rural communities. So, the activities were designed using the ADDIE approach (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), encompassing needs assessment, preparation of educational materials, implementation, and evaluation. A total of 70 participants took part in the program, which included material delivery, handwashing demonstrations, and interactive discussions. The results showed that this program was effective as a community-based preventive health promotion strategy and contributed concretely to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).
