Strengthening the Competence of Pencak Silat Referees Through a Contextual Practice-Based Participatory Training in IPSI Jayapura
Abstract
This community service program aims to improve the quality and quantity of pencak silat referees and judges under the auspices of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) of Jayapura City, in line with the resurgence of competitions after a hiatus due to the pandemic. The main issues faced by the partner include the limited number of active referees and judges, as well as uneven understanding of the latest pencak silat regulations. The program employed a participatory training method through a locally based experiential learning approach, combining interactive lectures, match simulations, case studies, and group discussions. The training was conducted over three days and attended by 25 participants from various pencak silat schools in Jayapura. Evaluation results showed an increase in the participants’ average score from 81.12 (pre-test) to 88.44 (post-test). In addition to cognitive improvement, participants demonstrated good technical skills and ethics during match simulations. A direct impact of this program was the increase in the number of active referees and judges from 15 to 40. These findings indicate that a context-based practical training approach is effective for enhancing refereeing capacity at the regional level. Furthermore, the program strengthened networking among pencak silat institutions and fostered collaboration in sports human resource development. Therefore, this training model can be recommended as a solution for strengthening regional sports institutions, contributing to the achievement of SDG Goals 4 and 16.
