Analysis of the Function of Bale Tani as Social Capital for Eco-Resilience and Communal Space in Ende Village, Central Lombok
Abstract
This study aims to analyze in depth the function of Bale Tani as social capital in supporting ecological resilience (eco-resilience) and as a communal space for the people of Ende Traditional Village, Central Lombok. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Primary data were collected through passive participant observation and unstructured interviews with Bale Tani residents, tour guides, and active local residents. Meanwhile, secondary data were obtained through documentation studies in the form of photos and videos of activities. The data analysis technique applies the interactive model of Miles and Huberman which includes the stages of data reduction, data presentation in tabular form, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the architectural characteristics of Bale Tani utilize local organic materials such as wood, bamboo, and alang-alang that are adaptive to seismic activity and provide natural thermal efficiency. Sociologically, the division of interior space is rigidly divided into sesangkok as a public-communal space, dalam bale as a private space for gender protection, and pawon as a logistics center. This spatial structure facilitates intensive social interactions that construct social capital in the form of trust, ethical norms andap asor, and social networks. This social capital is institutionalized in a communitarian manner through the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) within the cycle of tourism village development, self-help fundraising, and the distribution of economic and cultural roles. In conclusion, Bale Tani acts as a strategic communal space that maintains socio-cultural cohesion while simultaneously supporting ecological resilience in the face of modernity. This functional integration significantly supports the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the local level.
