Abstract

Optimizing Financial Technology for Financial Inclusion: Case Study of E-Wallet Usage among Millennials

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of digital wallet (e-wallet) usage on consumption behavior and financial inclusion among millennials. Employing a mixed methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from 180 respondents across four districts in Madura (Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep) with in-depth interviews involving eight informants. The findings reveal that ease of use, system security, and digital promotions such as cashback and discounts significantly influence e-wallet usage. However, approximately 58% of respondents tend to make impulsive purchases, while only 30% consistently manage their budgets or record expenses. Social pressure and peer influence also encourage the adoption of e-wallets as part of a modern lifestyle. Furthermore, e-wallets play a vital role in expanding financial inclusion, especially in areas with limited access to formal banking services. Nevertheless, low levels of financial literacy among users pose risks to personal financial management. Enhancing digital financial literacy is thus essential to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of e-wallets. These findings offer key implications for fintech providers and policymakers in developing inclusive and accountable financial technology adoption strategies.
