Sports Activities in the Islamic Boarding School Environment
Abstract
Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) increasingly integrate sport to support student development, but empirical research on their governance, participation, and impact remains limited. This research fills this gap through a six-week qualitative case study at Al Mahmud Islamic Boarding School, involving 12 key informants (leaders, teachers, and students), daily observations, and document analysis. Data were analyzed interactively to uncover management patterns, levels of engagement, and contributions to character education. The results indicate that sport is institutionalized through three channels: curricular physical education, co-/extracurricular activities, and dormitory-based recreational games. Evening and weekend scheduling, supported by multi-purpose facilities, ensures regular engagement. Participation is high; for example, 9 out of 12 informants reported students actively exercising every afternoon. Internal tournaments foster enthusiasm and strengthen solidarity. The pesantren leadership links sport to curriculum modernization, while gender-sensitive policies and safety protocols expand access. Analytically, this research demonstrates that sport functions as a physical activity and an instrument for character education. Informants emphasized that students who actively exercise are more disciplined, cooperative, and focused on their studies. Five out of six students stated that exercise helps maintain academic motivation and fitness. This finding confirms that an integrated sports model aligned with Islamic values ??can support spiritual, educational, and physical balance. Consequently, Islamic boarding school policies must emphasize structured schedules, inclusive facilities, strengthening educator capacity, and sustainable financing. Further research is recommended to test scalability and long-term impact.
