Development Strategy of Robusta Coffee Farming (On-Farm) in Gunung Raya District, Kerinci Regency
Abstract
This study was conducted in Gunung Raya District, the main center of robusta coffee production in Kerinci Regency, with the objectives of identifying the existing conditions and key challenges in the development of robusta coffee, analyzing internal and external factors affecting the competitiveness of coffee farming, and formulating priority strategies for sustainable development based on SWOT and AHP analyses. Respondents were selected purposively using the snowball sampling technique, and both primary and secondary data were analyzed descriptively using SWOT and AHP methods. The results indicate that although robusta coffee farming in Gunung Raya District is still dominated by small-scale farmers with an average land area of 0.5–2 hectares and traditional production systems, there is great potential for development through strengthening farmer institutions, improving post-harvest quality, and expanding market access. The SWOT and AHP analyses identified three priority strategies: enhancing farmers’ capacity through training in cultivation and farm management, developing partnerships with private sectors and cooperatives to strengthen the coffee value chain, and promoting Gunung Raya robusta coffee as a regional superior product with geographical indication. The policy implications highlight the importance of local government support in providing agricultural infrastructure, farmer development programs, and facilitating quality certification and marketing so that Gunung Raya robusta coffee can compete effectively in national and international markets.
