Abstract

Islam and Human Rights: Mapping of Academic Studies and Discourse

Abstract

This study aims to map the development and direction of academic discourse on Islam and Human Rights through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with bibliometric analysis. Using data from the Scopus database, the study examines 29 articles published between 1983 and 2025 based on the keywords “Islam AND Human Rights.” The selection process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, while data mapping was conducted using VOSviewer software to identify citation networks, author collaborations, and keyword co-occurrences. The findings reveal that research on Islam and Human Rights remains relatively limited but has shown a steady increase since the early 2000s. The distribution of publications is dominated by countries such as the United States and Indonesia, with significant contributions from Islamic-based universities. Bibliometric analysis identifies ten major keywords with the highest total link strength—Human Rights, Islam, Religion, Democracy, and Islamic Law—indicating a multidimensional connection across theological, legal, social, and political domains. Theoretically, the study highlights that the relationship between Islam and Human Rights is dialectical and convergent, where Islamic values can interact constructively with universal humanitarian principles. Academically, these findings provide an empirical overview of the global knowledge structure in the study of Islam and Human Rights and open opportunities for broader interdisciplinary research in the future
