The Analysis Morphophonemic and Affixation Process in the Dusun Language of Bebuloh Village, Brunei Darussalam
Abstract
This study examines the affixation process in the Dusun language as spoken in Kampung Bebuloh, Brunei Darussalam. Qualitative methods have been employed for data collection, involving audio recordings of interview sessions and subsequent analysis of field data. The filtered data will undergo examination utilizing structural theory (Bloomfield, 1933). The study identified five morphophonemic processes: phoneme changes, phoneme additions, phoneme loss, phoneme shifts, and phoneme weakening. There are 23 prefix affixes, five suffix affixes, one infix, one epenthesis, and a new process that involves past tense markers and phoneme replacement that were found for affixation processes. Also, the study found some things that could have been improved in the way people spoke the Dusun language. These included using Dusun language affixes in Standard Malay vocabulary and the Brunei Malay dialect, as well as using Dusun language affixes in the wrong way. The findings of this research are significant as they highlight the scarcity of proficient Dusun language speakers, a consequence of the declining number of native Dusun language speakers. Dusun language speakers often exhibit influence from foreign languages or Brunei Malay.
