Representation of Economy in Political Speech Titah
Abstract
This study examines the representation of the word 'economy' in the political text titah of the Opening Ceremony of the National Assembly (MMN) of Brunei Darussalam from 2009 to 2022. Using a historical discourse approach, this paper analyzes the discursive strategies employed to understand the relationship between economic lexical items and the economic situation, national and global finance, society's perspective and actions, and its importance in determining the direction and effectiveness of national governance. The findings indicate that the word 'economy' is consistently used in the data set in the form of social agencies or actors, objects, phenomena or events, as well as processes and actions. It also reveals that 'economy' is represented in both positive and negative forms to instill confidence in the community or provide a comprehensive picture to ensure that any social action carried out is in line with the intended idea. This study provides an alternative perspective and methodology to the existing literature, specifically those concerning economics and political texts in Brunei Darussalam. It is expected to be a valuable resource for further research and contribute to the development of related studies in this area.
