Abstract
This study focuses on the analysis of imperative sentences in the royal decrees of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, especially regarding youth in the past five years (2019 – 2024). Using qualitative text analysis methods, this study examines the types and patterns of imperative sentences, both explicit and implicit, in royal decrees to youth. Based on Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962) or Tindak Tutur is one approach in the field of pragmatics that examines how utterances not only convey information but also function as a form of action., this analysis pays attention to the structure, function, and subtlety of sentences in His Majesty’s decrees, which not only convey instructions but also the nation’s noble values and vision. This study found that the use of explicit and implicit imperative sentences reflects His Majesty’s wisdom in inspiring and encouraging youth to play a role as the main drivers of national development. The results of this study not only enrich the field of language studies but also provide a meaningful contribution to understanding communication in the monarchy system, especially in Brunei Darussalam.
