Abstract

SEHATI (Healthy with Your Own Herbs): Training and Assistance in Making Garlic Capsules for Hypertension Patients

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among the elderly and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disorders. Complementary therapies using herbal remedies, such as garlic, have shown potential in reducing blood pressure. However, public knowledge remains limited, particularly regarding practical skills in herbal processing. To address this gap, the SEHATI Program (Sehat dengan Herbal Sendiri/Healthy with Self-Made Herbal) was developed, combining health education, training, and mentoring in the production of garlic capsules with a community empowerment approach. The program was conducted on September 21, 2024, involving 10 elderly participants with hypertension. Evaluation employed a pre-test and post-test design using a structured knowledge questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing mean scores before and after the intervention. Results showed an increase in knowledge scores from 54.0 ± 8.7 to 83.5 ± 7.0, representing a 54.6% improvement. The greatest increase was observed in understanding the potential of garlic as a complementary therapy, rising from 52.0 ± 9.1 to 85.0 ± 6.8 (a 63.5% gain). These findings highlight that SEHATI is not only effective in improving elderly knowledge of hypertension and herbal therapy, but also novel in integrating simple technology transfer with community empowerment. Thus, the program contributes to the development of a locally based complementary therapy model that supports elderly health while fostering opportunities for community economic independence.
