Abstract
An Analysis of Students' Algebraic Thinking Skills and Perceptions of Algebra Tiles in Learning One-Variable Linear Equations
This study aimed to analyze students' algebraic thinking skills and their perceptions of the use of algebra tiles in learning One-Variable Linear Equations (OVLE), particularly in terms of student responses and perceived usefulness. The study was motivated by students' difficulties in understanding abstract algebraic concepts, indicating the need for instructional media that can support conceptual understanding through concrete representations. This research employed a mixed methods approach by integrating quantitative and qualitative data. The study involved 27 students who participated in learning activities using algebra tiles, while six students who demonstrated all algebraic thinking indicators were selected as subjects for in-depth analysis using purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of five essay questions measuring algebraic thinking skills and a perception questionnaire covering response and usefulness aspects. The findings revealed that students' algebraic thinking skills were categorized as very good, with an average score of 95. Analysis of students' responses showed that the selected participants were able to understand variables and algebraic symbols, represent problems in algebraic forms, identify mathematical relationships, perform generalizations, and model contextual problems algebraically. Furthermore, students demonstrated positive perceptions toward the use of algebra tiles, with a response percentage of 78.33% and a usefulness percentage of 72.92%. The findings indicate that the use of concrete representations through algebra tiles has the potential to support students' understanding of OVLE concepts while providing positive learning experiences. Practically, the results of this study may serve as a reference for mathematics teachers in utilizing manipulative media to support algebra learning in classroom settings.
