Abstract

Effectiveness of Knee Tuck Jump and Elastic-Band Training on Spike Performance in Adolescent Female Volleyball Players

Abstract

Volleyball spike performance hinges on effective stretch–shortening cycle (SSC) use and shoulder internal-rotation strength–coordination. This study compared knee tuck jump (KTJ)—a plyometric SSC stimulus—and elastic-band training targeting upper-limb power on adolescent female players’ spike performance. A two-group pretest–posttest design over 6 weeks (?18 supervised sessions; n=12; 6 per group). The primary outcome was a standardized spike score (five trials; total 0–25). Analyses emphasized within-group change (paired t) and between-group comparison on ?scores (independent t), with effect sizes. Results: KTJ improved from 8.00 ± 4.38 to 10.67 ± 0.82 (?mean = +2.67; p = 0.221; Cohen’s d? ? 0.57). Elastic-band improved from 6.17 ± 2.14 to 10.00 ± 3.03 (?mean = +3.83; p = 0.028; Cohen’s d? ? 1.25). The between-group difference on ?scores was non-significant (p = 0.614; Hedges’ g ? 0.27). Both interventions increased spike scores; elastic-band training was effective within-group, yet not superior to KTJ given this design and sample size. Coaches may combine KTJ (SSC/jump readiness) with elastic bands (scapulohumeral control/internal rotation), emphasizing repetition quality and adherence. Limitations include small sample size, possible baseline imbalance, attendance/fatigue variability, and toss variability; future trials with larger samples and ANCOVA/mixed-model analyses are warranted.
