Copyright, Licensing, and OA Policy
The International Journal of Essential Competencies in Education (IJECE), published by Lembaga Penelitian dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (LITPAM), Indonesia, is committed to protecting authors' intellectual property rights while promoting the accessibility, dissemination, and responsible reuse of scholarly research.
IJECE operates under an open-access publishing model in which authors retain copyright to their scholarly works, grant the journal non-exclusive publishing rights, and make published articles available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).
This policy establishes the journal's provisions concerning copyright ownership, publishing rights, licensing, open access, redistribution, and self-archiving.
1. Copyright Policy
1.1. Copyright Ownership
Authors who publish their scholarly work in IJECE retain copyright ownership of their articles. Copyright is not transferred to the journal or the publisher as a condition of publication.
Authors retain their intellectual property rights and may exercise those rights in accordance with applicable copyright law, the publication agreement, and the Creative Commons license applied to the published work.
1.2. Right of First Publication
Upon acceptance for publication, authors grant IJECE the non-exclusive right of first publication and authorize LITPAM, as the publisher, to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, host, index, and preserve the accepted work as part of the journal's scholarly publication activities.
This authorization is non-exclusive and does not transfer copyright ownership from the authors to IJECE or LITPAM.
IJECE is recognized as the original scholarly publication venue for articles first published in the journal.
1.3. Rights Retained by Authors
Authors retain the right to use, share, reproduce, and distribute their published works, subject to the applicable licensing terms and the rights of third parties.
These rights include:
- Sharing published articles with researchers, colleagues, students, and academic communities.
- Depositing manuscripts and published articles in institutional or subject-based repositories.
- Making published articles available through personal or institutional websites.
- Using published material in teaching, academic presentations, and subsequent scholarly works.
- Incorporating their research into theses, dissertations, books, or other scholarly publications, subject to applicable licensing and publication requirements.
- Entering into non-exclusive arrangements for the distribution or reuse of their work.
Authors are encouraged to acknowledge the original publication in IJECE and provide the relevant citation and DOI when redistributing or reusing their published articles.
2. Licensing Policy
2.1. Creative Commons License
IJECE publishes scholarly articles under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Under this license, users are permitted to share, copy, redistribute, adapt, remix, transform, and build upon licensed material in any medium or format, including for commercial purposes, provided that the applicable license conditions are satisfied.
The full licensing terms are available at: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/.
2.2. Attribution Requirements
Users who reuse or distribute licensed articles must provide appropriate attribution to the original authors, retain applicable copyright and license notices, include a link to the Creative Commons license, and indicate whether modifications have been made.
Appropriate attribution should identify the original scholarly work and, where applicable, provide its publication details and DOI.
Attribution must not imply that the original authors, IJECE, or LITPAM endorse the user or the manner in which the work has been reused.
2.3. ShareAlike Requirements
When users remix, transform, or build upon material licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, the resulting adapted material must be distributed under the same license or a license recognized as compatible with CC BY-SA 4.0.
The ShareAlike requirement supports the continued availability of adapted scholarly materials under compatible open licensing conditions.
2.4. Redistribution and Adaptation
The CC BY-SA 4.0 license permits redistribution and adaptation of licensed content without requiring additional permission from the copyright holder, provided that the license conditions are followed.
Users must not impose additional legal restrictions or technological measures that prevent others from exercising the permissions granted by the applicable license.
2.5. Third-Party Materials
Authors are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions to reproduce copyrighted third-party materials when such use is not otherwise permitted by law or an applicable license.
Third-party images, illustrations, instruments, datasets, or other materials included in an article may be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions.
Unless otherwise indicated, the journal's Creative Commons license applies to the authors' licensed scholarly work and does not automatically override the rights of third-party copyright holders.
Authors must clearly identify any third-party material that is excluded from the article's Creative Commons license.
2.6. Copyright and License Information in Published Articles
IJECE aims to ensure that copyright ownership and applicable licensing information are clearly displayed in published article records and full-text publications.
The copyright statement should identify the author or authors as copyright holders, while the licensing statement should identify the applicable Creative Commons license.
The specific copyright and licensing notices accompanying an individual published article govern that article. Updates to the journal's general policy do not retroactively replace the licensing terms of previously published articles.
3. Open Access Policy
3.1. Immediate Open Access
The International Journal of Essential Competencies in Education (IJECE) provides immediate open access to its published scholarly content.
All articles published under the journal's open-access model are made freely available online upon publication, without subscription requirements, paywalls, or embargo periods.
Readers may access, read, download, and share published articles without payment or mandatory registration.
IJECE believes that open access supports the dissemination of scientific knowledge, increases the accessibility and visibility of research, and facilitates scholarly exchange among researchers, educators, practitioners, policymakers, and the wider public.
3.2. Reuse of Open-Access Content
Published articles may be reused, distributed, and adapted in accordance with their applicable Creative Commons licensing terms.
The CC BY-SA 4.0 license permits educational, research, professional, and commercial reuse, subject to appropriate attribution and ShareAlike requirements where applicable.
Readers and users are responsible for respecting applicable copyright notices, third-party rights, and ethical standards when reusing published material.
3.3. Self-Archiving and Repository Deposits
IJECE supports author self-archiving and encourages the dissemination of scholarly research through appropriate repositories and academic platforms.
Authors are permitted to deposit and share:
- Preprints: Manuscript versions disseminated before formal peer review, provided that prior dissemination is disclosed to the journal during submission.
- Accepted Manuscripts: Versions accepted for publication following peer review and editorial assessment.
- Published Versions: Final published articles, including the journal's official publication files, subject to the applicable Creative Commons license.
Authors may deposit eligible manuscript versions and published articles in institutional repositories, disciplinary repositories, academic websites, or personal websites without an embargo imposed by IJECE.
Where an article has been formally published, authors are encouraged to include the complete bibliographic citation, the journal name, and a link to the official DOI or article landing page.
The posting of a preprint does not exempt authors from the journal's originality, authorship, research ethics, and publication integrity requirements.
3.4. Article Processing Charges and Reader Access
IJECE distinguishes between publication-related charges that may apply to authors and the conditions under which readers access published articles.
Any applicable Article Processing Charges (APCs), including payment conditions and available exemptions or waivers, are governed by the journal's separately published APC policy.
Such charges do not impose subscription fees or access restrictions on readers. Published open-access articles remain freely accessible under their applicable licensing terms.
3.5. Long-Term Accessibility
IJECE recognizes the importance of maintaining access to scholarly publications beyond their initial publication date.
The journal supports the continued accessibility of its scholarly content through its electronic publishing infrastructure, monthly server backup arrangements maintained by LITPAM, persistent article identification using DOIs, and digital preservation configurations.
Further information is provided in the journal's Digital Archiving and Preservation Policy.
4. Policy Implementation and Responsibility
IJECE and LITPAM are committed to communicating copyright, licensing, and open-access conditions clearly to authors, readers, and other users of published scholarly material.
The editorial office is responsible for communicating relevant publication rights and licensing information during the submission and publication processes.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that submitted materials comply with applicable copyright requirements and that necessary permissions for third-party materials have been obtained.
Readers and other users are responsible for complying with the licensing terms applicable to the material they reuse.
The journal may periodically review this policy to maintain consistency with applicable copyright law, developments in scholarly communication, and internationally recognized open-access publishing principles.
5. Official License Notice
Authors retain copyright to their scholarly works and grant IJECE the non-exclusive right of first publication.
Published articles designated under the journal's CC BY-SA 4.0 policy are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
