Abstract

The Impact of Employment Status on Physical Education Teacher Performance in Elementary Schools

This study analyzes the performance differences between civil servant (PNS) and honorary physical education teachers in Praya Tengah, Lombok Tengah. The employment status disparity is believed to affect teaching quality, yet limited research has explored this impact. A mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, was employed. The quantitative approach tested significant differences between the two teacher groups using a t-test across aspects such as lesson planning, teaching implementation, evaluation, professional development, additional duties, work behavior, and employment status. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 16 PNS teachers and 19 honorary teachers, and analyzed using SPSS software. The qualitative approach involved in-depth interviews to explore factors influencing teacher performance. The results show that PNS teachers perform better than honorary teachers in nearly all tested aspects. For example, the t-test revealed a significant difference in lesson planning (t = 7.128, p < 0.001). Interviews also revealed that PNS teachers have greater access to training and resources, while honorary teachers face limitations in these areas. In conclusion, employment status significantly influences physical education teacher performance, with PNS teachers demonstrating better performance. The study recommends improving training access, better facilities, streamlined administrative tasks, and enhanced welfare for honorary teachers to help them match the teaching quality of PNS teachers.
